The thought of a woman unknowingly putting potentially cancerous materials directly in contact with her body seems appalling. This very well could be a potential contributor to uterine, ovarian or breast cancer. Hopefully you will think twice before you use a tampon or a traditional sanitary napkin. Fortunately now there is a more effective and safer alternative that most women don’t know about. There are two basic problems with traditional feminine hygiene products: (1) The synthetic materials used now create a perfect breeding ground for Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS), especially in young females who haven’t had time to develop the necessary antibodies. (2) The chlorine used in the bleaching process (white always looks better to the public) can release dioxin, a known carcinogen, into a woman’s vagina, uterus, and bloodstream 1996 study by EPA also named dioxin exposure with increased risk for endometriosis (an infection of the uterine lining) Both these problems are controversial, but, ironically, both of these potential dangers to women were known about years ago. Toxic Shock Syndrome In 1980, Procter and Gamble Rely Tampons were discovered to have caused the death of 38 women from Toxic Shock Syndrome. A big flurry of publicity followed. Rely Tampons were taken off the market and women were warned to use the least absorbent tampon possible. However, it is an industry-known fact that there were no real standards for absorbency, and one company’s "absorbent" product might actually have been more absorbent than another company’s "super absorbent" product! Although the number of TSS cases reported to the Centers for Disease Control has dropped since the Rely Tampon tragedy, many experts attribute this decrease to the termination of active surveillance by the Centers for Disease Control rather than an absence of cases.
TSS Symptoms Many people with toxic shock syndrome experience a 2- to 3-day period of mild symptoms before they develop the disease. These mild symptoms may include low-grade fever, muscle aches, chills, and malaise (a feeling of general discomfort, uneasiness, or ill health), rash, redness of eyes, lips or tongue, headache, sore throat, cough, nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain, confusion or disorientation, low blood pressure.
TSS Cases Under Reported According to Tom Riley, author of Price of a Life, who has represented more victims of Toxic Shock Syndrome than any other attorney: "All experts agree that the number of TSS cases in the United States are under-reported. That is because reporting by the states to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is voluntary and most states are unwilling to incur the expense of gathering the data and submitting it to the CDC. Toxic shock syndrome eventually appears in tampon users, sometimes with deadly results but always with the infliction of a terrible ordeal and some residual effects. According to a February, 1999 USA Today article, “The CDC estimates that 1300 people get toxic-shock syndrome annually. Half are related to tampons; 5% die." (that figures to 65 women a year that actually die!!) In short, Toxic Shock Syndrome is alive and well. The truth is, most of the testing that is done on menstrual products is paid for by the manufacturers themselves. There are few independent studies. There is one exception. In 1994, two New York University Medical Center researchers, Drs. Philip Tierno and Bruce Hanna, tested tampons. According to a 1999 article in E Magazine, "Their studies concluded that tampons containing synthetics amplify the production of the TSS-causing toxin by certain strains of bacteria, whereas the all-cotton tampons produced no measurable toxin." The same article quotes Dr. Tierno as saying, "Synthetic tampons absorb more water than [does] cotton, leaving behind concentrated proteins that are used by staph bacteria to create the toxin, creating toxin factories." To this day, it is believed that most menstrual products still contain rayon, a synthetic material, but this cannot be confirmed. Nor do we have any idea what other ingredients are in these products, since manufacturers are not required to disclose them.
The Many Dangers of Dioxin The dangers of dioxin have been repeatedly reported, in particular, the dangers of dioxin with relation to our food and environment, (the EPA recently reported that there really is "no set acceptable level of dioxin exposure" given that it is cumulative and slow to degrade) but also about dioxin as a threat to women because it is a byproduct of the bleaching process used to manufacture tampons and pads. (many health-minded people prefer to buy Unbleached coffee filters and unbleached paper towels because of the bleach/dioxin concern) Repeated exposure to dioxin can lead to cancer, as well as to non-cancer health effects, including developmental delays, birth defects, hormone disruption and immune cell suppression. With repeated exposure, dioxin accumulates in humans, particularly women's body fat and breast milk. 16,800 tampons over the course of a lifetime certainly qualifies," says E-Magazine, Jennifer Bogo. The EPA has also concluded that people with high exposures to dioxin may be at risk for other effects that could suppress the immune system, increase the risk of pelvic inflammatory disease, reduce fertility, and maybe interfer with noraml fetal development and childhood development We will probably never know the real damage caused by toxic tampons and sanitary napkins. How many unexplained symptoms are related to the toxic effects of using tampons or wearing toxic sanitary pads? Why do women outnumber men at the doctor’s offices? Am I the only one asking these questions?
Let It Flow Even if tampons weren’t toxic, it doesn’t make sense that the best way to deal with menstruation is to stop the flow with a tampon. Even the best absorbing tampon is going to allow for re-absorption by the surrounding tissues. (re-absorption, is a key point to remember when using a tampon) The menstruation flow is designed to flow out of the body. This is what should be allowed. It is understandable that women use tampons because they feel safer, but the dangers just aren’t worth the risk. Poor performing pads are the reason why so many women choose tampons.
This situation can be improved by having a higher efficiency sanitary napkin. Further improvement can be expected if it were possible to wear a sanitary napkin that was non-toxic, emitted negative ions, monitored your vaginal fluid pH to check for vaginitis and absorbed many times more fluid than competing brands while keeping you dry.
